Apple II
My Apple IIe (or "Apple ][e") was my first computer. Mine arrived at my house after my dad booted it from his office in favor of a pair of sleek new Olivetti 8088 machines. It performed well enough to teach me a little about BASIC, file systems and snippets of assembler.
Emulator
- ApplePC - The best Windows emulator for Apple II. Information, installation instructions and download: ApplePC Emulator
Favorite Titles
- The Bard's Tale - 6-character hack-n-slash RPG. Wonderfully
addicting until my mom revealed the bards actually sang pop tunes from the sixties and
seventies. Trademark phrases included: 1) "Denizens of this mystic place assault you
without warning." 2) "Will your stalwart band chose to (F)ight or
(R)un?" 3) "You face death itself, in the form of 5
Dwarves." 4) "Alas, your party has expired, but gone to adventurer
heaven."
(Information: Bard's Tale)
(Download)
- Seven Cities of Gold - Play Christopher Columbus and terrorize the
American natives. Plunder and enslave for the glory of your queen!
(Information: Seven Cities of Gold)
(Download)
- Adventure Construction Set - Allowed anyone to build a graphical maze
adventure game about just about anything. The favorite model of my group of
friends? The school building and the monster teachers found within.

Best Memories
- There was a storefront repair shop called Computer Bay in nearby Crystal Lake, Illinois.
When I had programming problems, there was actually a tech who would sit down with me and
help me debug - free of charge!
- The first time I saw the color yellow on an Apple monitor.
- For years I lived with a flaky 80-column card. We would drive the machine to the
shop and it would magically start working. Eventually we cut the shop visit out of
the trip and simply drove the machine around the block - worked even better.
